What Should You Check Before Buying a Sofa Online in Australia?
Share
Before buying a sofa online in Australia, check six things: exact dimensions, delivery access, internal construction, cushion specification, upholstery care and the seller's delivery/returns/warranty terms. Photos can tell you style. They cannot tell you whether the sofa blocks the balcony door, whether the cushions recover after daily use or whether the box clears your lift.
1. Are the listed dimensions complete?
Record overall width, depth and height, but also seat depth, seat height, arm width, chaise depth and the dimensions of individual modules. Then draw the full footprint onto your room plan.
Use DORSA's sofa sizing guide if you are working from an apartment floorplan.
2. Can it physically reach the room?
Measure building access before ordering. The problem is rarely the front door alone; it can be a low lift, a corridor turn, a fire door or a narrow entry sequence. Ask whether legs or arms are removable and what the largest shipping component measures.
3. What is under the upholstery?
Ask what the frame is made from, how the seat is supported and what the cushions contain. Marketing words such as 'premium' or 'luxury' are not specifications. You want enough information to understand what will carry weight and how the cushions are intended to behave over time.
In an anecdotal Reddit couch discussion, commenters pointed to cushion collapse as an early visible sign of cheaper foam/fill. That is not a laboratory test, but it is a useful reminder to ask about the cushion system rather than judging only the silhouette.
See DORSA's sofa frame, foam and fabric guide for the construction checklist.
4. Is the upholstery realistic for your life?
Get the fabric name and composition, cleaning instructions and any performance testing the supplier provides. If you have children, pets or strong northern/western light, say so before ordering. A pale fabric is not automatically impractical and a dark fabric is not automatically durable; performance depends on the textile and maintenance.
5. What happens if the sofa is faulty?
Read the seller's written warranty and returns policy, but remember that Australian consumer guarantees can apply independently of a voluntary warranty. The ACCC explains that consumer guarantees apply automatically to goods and that warranties do not remove those rights. If you are unsure about a specific dispute, use the ACCC guidance or seek advice rather than relying on a social-media comment.
6. Is a sale price actually changing your decision?
Do not let a countdown timer erase the fit test. The ACCC also makes clear that sale or clearance status does not generally remove consumer guarantees for faults that were not disclosed. Compare the actual product and terms, not just the percentage graphic.
A five-minute online sofa checklist
- Screenshot dimensions and product specification.
- Draw the footprint on your floorplan.
- Measure lift, corridor and door access.
- Save fabric composition and care instructions.
- Read delivery, return and warranty terms before paying.
- Keep the order confirmation and product description.
Bottom line
A good online sofa purchase is a specification decision, not a photo decision. Verify fit, access, construction, upholstery and the written terms first. The nicer the sofa and the harder it is to move, the less sense there is in guessing.
